Sophie Barbara is a native of Toronto and received her early education in that city. Upon graduating high school she attended The Chicago Academy of Fine Arts and studied Fashion and Costume Design. She returned to Toronto and took up a career in that field: first in the garment industry and later designing personal appearance wardrobes for night club and television personalities. Her interest in art took her to New York City where she attended the Art Students League; at the same time acting as an independent consultant for several New York and Hong Kong based fashion organizations.

She left the fashion world to pursue her interest in art; returned to Toronto and received her botanical training at the University of Toronto. Although she paints and draws botanical subjects, she is not a botanist. Her primary focus is on the artistic development of the botanical world, its plants, pollinators and predators. Her work has been exhibited in galleries in the Toronto and Niagara area.
