Losing Paradise? Endangered Plant Species Here and Around the World
To increase public awareness of plants that are threatened with extinction here and around the world, the ASBA will be collaborating with the World Conservation Union (IUCN) and the Center for Plant Conservation to produce an exhibition of endangered plants. This juried exhibition will include approximately 45 original artworks created by our membership internationally. “Losing Paradise?” promises to be an exciting project that will build relationships between artists, institutions, conservation organizations, scientists, and horticulturists.
Curatorial Information: The exhibition will be curated according to several criteria, including our usual three criteria (scientific accuracy, aesthetics, and technical mastery), as well as the need to fill a particular botanical niche. We would like to have plants depicted at all levels of protection, including state, national, and international, as well as representing a wide variety of genera and habitats and having an interesting story to tell. In addition, we will be seeking digital photos and text documenting your process for a virtual exhibit.
Eligibility: All ASBA members, internationally.
Subject: The subject matter for this exhibition will include:
Plants listed by states as threatened or endangered. The Center for Plant Conservation (centerforplantconservation.org) has a great website with links to lists by state, as well as contact people in each state.

The best way to use this website is to go to the home page above, click on Search, and type in the Genus or species you're interested in. You can also browse through the list to find something that interests you.

If you have no access to the internet, please contact Carol Woodin.
Media: Any two-dimensional original artwork.
Sizes: Artwork must be appropriate for framing at 24 X18”, 30X24”, and 40X34”, vertically or horizontally. ASBA will provide mats cut specifically for each artwork. Please subtract about 8 10” from each frame dimension to allow for space around the artwork and a 3” 4” mat.
Submissions: Up to three entries, submitted digitally, file size 360 dpi, 8” high, jpeg. CD labeled with artist's name and title(s) of artwork(s). Individual files on disk labeled with artwork title, size, and medium. No stick-on labels.
Submission Deadline: August 29, 2008. Entry form will be available on ASBA website in July.
Presentation: ASBA will be responsible for framing and shipping artworks between venues.
Availability: The work need not be for sale, however, it must be available to travel for up to 2 years.
Catalog: A full-color catalog will be published.
On-line Archive: All entries, whether accepted for exhibition or not, will be part of a virtual on-line archive.
Further Subject Information: Although it is not required, you may notify ASBA of the plants you intend to portray. (See updated listing in box) We are keeping an informal list and will let you know if that plant has been mentioned by another artist. It may be necessary to choose plants that occur outside your geographical area. Some internationally protected plants can be found in botanical gardens and greenhouses. We can't stress enough the ethics of proper procedures if painting these plants in the wild. They must be studied in the wild and they and their habitats must be left exactly as they are found. It is strongly suggested that you become affiliated with scientists, conservation organizations, botanical gardens, etc. that can provide guidance in locating and studying the plants whether they be in public collections or in the wild.

This is only an informal listing for artists’ knowledge about what plants other artists are intending to portray. Artworks will be curated according to our normal criteria, as well as botanical criteria mentioned in the Call for Entries.
